Community Mosaics with Laurel True Costa Rica Trip
EcoTeach is known for saving sea turtles, cleaning beaches, building hatcheries and planting trees. In January 2013, we plan to add neighborhood beautification to our list of hands-on activities as mosaic artist, Laurel True, leads a group of EcoTeach participants in a Community Mosaic Mural Making Tour in Fortuna, Costa Rica.
Laurel True is the founder of True Mosaics Studio and the Global Mosaic Project. She is a public artist, educator and community organizer specializing in sculptural and architectural mosaic projects. True’s projects focus on urban and developing areas. She has facilitated projects in the U.S., Africa and Haiti through the Global Mosaic Project.
EcoTeach is honored to host True as she facilitates the creation of a public mosaic mural for a small medical clinic in the town of Fortuna, located at the base of Arenal Volcano. True will conduct Mosaic workshops where participants will learn mosaic setting techniques, how to pass those techniques on to others in the context of a community project, design development and approaches to project coordination. Then, participants will work with local community members of all ages to create the mural.
In addition to the mural making project, participants will take a tour of an organic farm, explore the town of Fortuna, visit rescued wild animals like monkeys, peccarys and macaws at Asis Wild Animal Rescue Center and have a chance to fly through the forest canopy on a zip line tour!
The True Mosaic Costa Rica project takes place January 10-19, 2013. It will bring art education, neighborhood beautification and the chance to work with local community members to the town of Fortuna.
